Summer Xia: The Struggle for LGBT Rights in Mainland China: The Voice of a Student Activist

Xia Xu is originally from Yingtan, a small city in Jiangxi province. She is currently a law student at Shanghai International Studies University. Passionate about LGBT causes, she has been working with LGBT non-pro t organizations and leading national campaigns in support of LGBT students’ rights in mainland China since 2014. She served as the President of Rainbow Aliens, the only underground queer student organization in Jiangxi, and co-founded Love and Voice, a LGBT organization in the city of Nanchang, where she went to college. For the past two years, she has been working for the Gays and Lesbians Campus Association of China. She worked on the case, Qiubai v. the Ministry of Education, where the plaintiff was suing the Ministry of Education to change the homophobic language in Chinese textbooks. She continues to be a legal advisor and campaign counselor for students working on the textbook issue.
